Lucky escape for Buzz the canary left out in the cold

A CANARY has been found dumped in an ice-cream tub in the close of a block of flats.

The domestic bird was discovered by a resident in the building, who was taking his rubbish out at around 6pm on Tuesday.

He came across the plastic box in the flat close on Hamilton Lane in Bo'ness and realised there was something inside.

The female canary was collected by a Scottish SPCA inspector and taken to the charity's Wildlife Rescue Centre in Dunfermline.

Centre manager Colin Seddon said: "Whoever abandoned the bird had put air holes in the sides and lid of the box. However, it was still a very cruel act as the box could have easily been stood on or thrown away.

"It is a domestic canary and was a bit thin, but is otherwise in good health."

The Scottish SPCA is appealing for information on the bird, which is now being cared for at the charity's Edinburgh and Lothians Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Balerno, where it has been named Buzz by staff.

Assistant manager at the centre, Kenny Sharpe, said: "The bird is doing absolutely fine, she is eating fine and is quite active."
