Rodney French, 45, owner of Lonsdale and Dutch architectural metal worker based next to the bus stop, heard the "almighty crash" and spoke to the pedestrian following the incident.

"From what I know a car went round the corner on wet cobbles and the back end flicked out before it crashed into the bus stop," he said.

"The pedestrian said he saw it coming and managed to take a step back before it hit him.

"It was quite a clatter. and I thought something had fallen down in my own shop.

"The guy was shaken up after it and seemed to have a bang on his head and knee."

Shirley Burnett, 45, owner of Handbag Heaven across the road, said: "It was a massive bang and had quite an impact on the bus stop, but the man seemed ok and was up and about after it."

The car was uplifted within an hour, and damaged plastic from the bus stop was removed.
