Lothian bio company wins fuel supply contract

a FIRM based in the Lothians is to play a key part in a new green energy contract that will deliver renewable heat to public sector buildings.

Buccleuch Bioenergy Ltd, based in Dalkeith, is one of ten firms which will supply wood for fuel using only sustainable sources.

It may also install wood-burning boilers for central ­government, other public bodies, universities and colleges under the Scottish Government’s Biomass Energy Supply Framework. The overall contract is expected to save taxpayers up to £8.5 million and will avoid using more than 198,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide over the next four years.

Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the contract would contribute to the Scottish Government’s target of 11 per cent of Scotland’s total heat demand being met from renewable energy by 2020.

She added: “It is important for companies like Buccleuch Bioenergy because it supports jobs and encourages further growth and investment in ­Scotland’s renewable energy sector.”

In 2007, Buccleuch BioEnergy installed a biomass boiler at Queen Margaret University, Musselburgh.

The boiler supplies the entire campus, including 800 ­bedrooms in the halls of ­residence, academic buildings, administration buildings, a ­student union and indoor sports facilities with heating and hot water.
