Lorraine Kelly responds to '˜hilarious' Dundee statue petition

TV host Lorraine Kelly has responded to a petition urging council officials to erect a statue of her in Dundee city centre, stating that she doesn't believe she's '˜worthy to be beside Desperate Dan'.

The petition on Change.org has attracted over 150 signatures since it was launched earlier this week.

It was started by Lorraine Kelly fan and Dundonian Ally Farrell who wrote: “Lorraine Kelly has been working for years as a broadcaster and personality and it is about time the city recognised her efforts.

“She has done so much for the region and now it’s our time for us to pay her back.

“A statue would be the most appropriate way to do her work justice.

“Thank you very much goodnight x”

Upon hearing about the petition, an amused Lorraine Kelly Tweeted: “I’m not worthy to be beside the LEGEND that is desperate dan - has really made me laugh though”. In another Tweet, Kelly described the online campaign as ‘hilarious’.

Many signatories believe a statue could benefit the city of Dundee. One person wrote: “This would bring so many people to Dundee to pay homage to the Queen of Morning television. It simply must happen. Bring it on”.

Another poster said she had ‘put Dundee on the map’.

The 57-year-old ITV presenter, who hails from Glasgow but has lived in Broughty Ferry for the past seven years, has enjoyed an association with the City of Discovery since she met her Dundee-born husband three decades ago.

In February 2004 Mrs Kelly beat BBC Radio Scotland presenter Lesley Riddoch and the disgraced former MI5 agent David Shayler to become rector of Dundee University.

She has also revealed herself to be a huge fan of Dundee United and has been spotted on numerous occasions cheering the team on at Tannadice Stadium.
