Lord's wood open again to students

THE historic Lord Ancrum's wood at Newbattle Abbey College has reopened, allowing improved local access.

The project, which was funded through investment from the Forestry Commission Scotland, has improved existing pathways in order to allow Newbattle Abbey College to make use of the surrounding ancient woodland.

The 100,000 investment has brought an all-weather footpath along the river, which subsequently led to the upgrading of existing walkways and improvements to high areas of the woodland.

Environment Minister Roseanna Cunningham said: "The woodlands found at the college are a fantastic resource and will be used to promote healthy outdoor activity, education, training and skills development."

Newbattle College, Scotland's only residential adult college, is already undergoing a major refurbishment project to modernise the 16th-century Midlothian college.

In January, it was awarded 450,000 to rebuild the college's roof, after which an integral refurbishment will take place. The wood reopened yesterday.
