Lords to host Arctic Convoy veteran event

A GROUP of Russian Arctic Convoy veterans is set to attend a Spirit of Russia Party at the House of Lords next month.

Among the six veterans will be 82-year-old Jock Dempster from Dunbar, who will be the only Russian Arctic Convoy veteran from Scotland to attend.

Among the other attendees will be Lord Soley and Lord Northbrook, politicians and senior members of the Russian Embassy. It is hoped the Russian ambassador, Alexander Yakovenko, will also attend.

The main aim of the event is to push for the story of the Russian Arctic Convoy veterans to be included in the school curriculum nationwide.

Mr Dempster, chairman of the Russian Arctic Convoy Club Scotland, said: "There's not one kid or adult in Russia who doesn't know about the Russian convoys. It's sad when you realise that nobody knows a thing about the convoys over here."
