Local Round-up: Woodwork project takes to the catwalk

The social enterprise Greyfriars Recycling of Wood has been commissioned to make two pairs of shoes that will strut the catwalk at Graduate Fashion Week in Earl's Court in London.

The enterprise works with the city's homeless and vulnerable residents to make furniture out of recycled church pews. Workshop manager Tommy Steel said: "The shoes are four and a half centimetres high and we'll need to shape the wood and burn a design of a Cambodian temple on the side."

Getting to root of dentist fear

A NIGHT to encourage people to get over their fear of going to the dentist is being hosted by Craigentinny Dental Care, following a survey which showed as many as one in five women suffer from "extreme dental anxiety". The event is open to all ages, and dentists and dental nurses will be on hand.

CITY firm Eagle Couriers has been named as the UK Courier Company of the Year by the National Courier Association.

Smashing new exhibition brings touch of glass

The National Museum of Scotland is to unveil a new exhibition featuring the work of more than 100 British and Irish glassmakers.

The collection of modern glasswork has been gifted to National Museums Scotland by Alan Poole and Dan Klein, who began collecting in the late 1970s.

A Passion for Glass will be the first chance to see the objects on display and find out about their creators and the skills used to make them.

It will run from May 20 to September 11. Entry is free.

Guided tour to reveal hidden beauty spots

A GUIDED walk of lesser-known beauty spots in East Lothian is being led next month by county archaeologists.

The 8km trek around Tantallon and Auldhame will see walkers explore a castle as well as a 16th-century laird's house. Walkers will take in clifftop views before swinging inland by historic steadings and a landscape dominated by Tantallon Castle.

The four-hour tour takes place on May 7 from 10am and costs 5.
