Local Round-up: Volunteers offer college English boost

A COLLEGE is using volunteers to help busy foreign students improve their grasp of English.

Stevenson College launched the scheme for those unable to attend regular English classes.

Jean Howat, a lecturer at the Sighthill college, said all volunteers would receive full training, and that the programme benefits them as much as the students.

She said: "Each student has a reason to improve their English to help them through every-day life or gain employment."

Student flats development is put to bed

A NEW 59-bed student accommodation development has been completed in the Capital by Stewart Milne Construction.

Delivered on behalf of Ziggurat Student Living, the 2 million project incorporated a full conversion of the former office premises at Wellgate House in the Cowgate. The block features a mix of studio flats and flats for between four and six people, with three two-storey penthouse flats.

Napier holds charity lecture

CHARITY Combat Stress is set to hold its annual fundraising lecture at Edinburgh Napier University.

The guest speaker at the lecture on August 23 will be Brigadier Allan Mallinson.

The historically themed lecture aims to attract more than 200 people.

Tenant group to have a say

A CHANCE to hear what the Edinburgh Tenants Federation has been doing over the past few months is coming up at its next quarterly meeting.

The event, at which the quarterly progress report will be presented, takes place at Norton Park Conference Centre, 57 Albion Road, on Monday, September 5.

Farmers' market served up

Juniper Green Community Council hosts its next farmers' market on Saturday, August 27 from 9am to 1pm at the car park of the Kinleith Arms.

A musician will be on hand to add to the atmosphere of the bargaining and conversation.

WH SMITH has donated 300 books to the patient library of the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Diane Lockhart, voluntary services manager, said: "We are delighted that WHSmith has chosen Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. It is a fantastic initiative and one which will be used and enjoyed by patients across the hospital."

The WHSmith Trust is an independent charity that aims to promote literacy and support the local communities in which WHSmith staff and customers live and work.
