Local Round-up: Visit the zoo for a DNA workshop

A DNA workshop is set to take place at Edinburgh Zoo next month.

With a little help from the zoo's very own DNA experts, visitors can explore the scientific techniques used in television programmes like CSI.

They can also learn about genetics and animal forensic science as part of the interactive workshop on April 12.

It will take place from 11am to 4.30pm.

LECTURERS at Edinburgh University were honoured by their students at the third annual teaching awards.

Edinburgh University Students' Association presented awards to 11 members of staff, postgraduate tutors, courses and departments nominated by their students.

Shop lease to be extended

THE Royal Mile General Grocers is to get its lease extended.

The store, at 244 Canongate, has been leased to the Khan family since 1982. Tanveer Khan inherited the business in 2006 and asked for a 21-year lease. Councillors have been asked to approve the extension at a finance meeting.

Learn about digital switchover

RESIDENTS can find out more about the switch to digital television when the Digital UK switchover roadshow visits.

The roadshow will take place at Ocean Terminal between 10am and 8pm on Friday, and the Gyle Shopping Centre the following day, from 9am to 6pm.

City band on track to win O2 Arena gig

A ROCK band from Lasswade could be just one performance away from a gig at the O2 Arena in London after winning a semi-final berth in a prestigious music competition.

Hardback have stormed through the early rounds of Live and Unsigned to give themselves a chance at a recording contract and a once-in-a-lifetime concert at the O2 Arena.

The band will now compete in the North East Area Final at the Journal Tyne Theatre in Newcastle on Easter Sunday, April 24.

Supporters to hold Football Programme FayreA GROUP of Dundee supporters is holding a Football Programme Fayre in the Capital.

The event will be from 6pm to 8pm on April 7 at HSBC in Hobart House, on Hanover Street.

Admission is free.

A variety of Scottish and English League and Non-League programmes, Internationals, and a selection of football books and memorabilia will be available.

All proceeds from the event will go to the Dundee FC Supporters' Society.
