Local round-up: Students quiz politicians

STUDENTS and staff at Telford College had the opportunity to quiz politicians at an event today.

Representatives from the Labour, Conservative, Lib Dem and SNP parties attended the college hub between 11am and 3pm to talk about their plans and answer any questions from students and staff.

Compostable packaging wins award

A GREEN local company has won a Climate Week Award.

Vegware, the only UK company to supply cafes and shops with disposable cups, cutlery and packaging made of compostable vegetable material, won best new product at an awards ceremony in London on March 21.

Vegware products can be binned with all other food waste and composted into fertiliser and biogas fuel.

Currys aims for signage change

Electrical giant Currys is to change the signage at its Princes Street store.

The company has applied to replace the existing Currys Digital sign with a new sign for Currys and PC World.

The application is due to be considered by city planners in the coming months.

Event on challenges faced by torture survivors

The work of the Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture and the many challenges faced by torture survivors living in Scotland will be the focus of an event in Edinburgh tonight.

Foundation chief executive Keith Best will address a range of issues from the current unrest in North Africa and the Middle East to recent allegations of UK complicity in torture.

The event will take place at Augustine Church Centre, George IV Bridge, at 6pm and is open to the public.

Modern take on Cinderella

PUPILS at Prestonfield Primary will be performing their own interpretation of Cinderella this Friday.

Members of the drama club have scripted the story and are leaving it up to the audience to decided the ending with a cliffhanger twist.

The plot involves modern anecdotes about celebrities.

M&S to sell graduate's dress designA FASHION and textiles graduate has had a design produced by Marks and Spencer.

Jett Sweeney, from Musselburgh, graduated from the HNC fashion and textiles course at Telford College in 2007 before moving to a degree at Edinburgh College of Art.

Last year she won the Scottish Fashion Awards' Graduate of the Year competition which was sponsored by Marks and Spencer.

As part of her prize, the high-street chain agreed to produce and sell a dress designed by Ms Sweeney.
