Local Round-up: Records show visitors to archives fall

THE number of visitors to the City Archives is on the decline, new figures have shown.

Over December and January, only 72 people visited the archives, where official city records are stored. The figure is well below the target for the period, which was 110 visitors.

The number of documents retrieved by staff was also 100 below the target of 550.

Bad weather in December has been blamed, while seasonal variations also played a part, which were not accounted for in the targets.

Free session on jobs law

There will be a seminar on employment law at the offices of Gravitate HR in India Street on May 11.

The session is free to social enterprises and is run in association with social enterprise support organisation Firstport.

Crafty way to go to market

THERE will be a craft market at The Hub on Castlehill on May 8. The event, run by Magpie Market, will feature more than 30 stalls selling items including hand-made and vintage clothing, jewellery and homewares from designers and artists across Scotland. The market runs from 11am until 4pm.

Radio Forth sounds out fundraisers

PEOPLE in Edinburgh are being urged to devise quirky fundraising methods in time for a charity day supporting vulnerable children.

Radio Forth's Cash for Kids day is on May 27. Organisers want people to take on daring challenges such as dress-down days, waxing, shaving and any other popular methods.

Money raised will also help the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Band tunes up to rise in the world rankings

A BRASS band bidding to become one of the world's best is set to perform a concert in Edinburgh.

The Exchange Communications Whitburn Band is set to embark on a UK tour later this year as it attempts to climb higher from its current world ranking of 17th.

In preparation for this, the group will appear at the City of Edinburgh Methodist Church in Nicolson Square on May 6.

Tickets, priced 7 and 4, will be available on the door on the night.

Guitarist goes solo in Capital

A CLASSICAL guitarist from Edinburgh who has performed for the Dalai Lama will give a full solo recital in the city next month.

Sean Shibe, 19, will perform at the Royal Over-Seas League Clubhouse on Princes Street on May 11, from 6.30pm.
