Local Round-up: Film events set to light up the screen

A SERIES of film-making events incorporating documentary, fiction, live performance and music are set to be run by Live Film in Leith this month.

Showing in the Out Of The Blue Drill Hall on Dalmeny Street, the project is billed as a "weekly programme of unique cinematic content", where various aspects of film-making "merge in a series of interactive screening events, workshops and open studios". It runs on August 7, 14, 21 and 28 from 9.15pm until 10.30pm.

Porty market has got it stall

An organic monthly market will be held in Portobello this Saturday.

The event, held in Brighton Park, offers a range of locally produced, seasonal and organic food and crafts. The PEDAL group will be selling locally-themed T-shirts.

The market runs from 9.30am to 1.30pm.

Universities in spotlight

THE principal of Queen Margaret University is hosting a lecture entitled "what are universities for?".

Professor Petra Wend will give the talk on the development of universities as part of QMU's professional lecture series.

The lecture is at the Royal College of Physicians on October 24.

Village puts its energy into bid

KIRKNEWTON has made it into round two of the 100,000 energyshare bid.

More than 900 groups throughout the UK applied, with Kirknewton coming 33rd overall. Now the Kirknewton Development Trust has a month to put together an energyshare proposal.

Award proves hospital radio station value

AN award for a hospital radio station in the Lothians has proved the worth of the service, volunteers have said.

Radio Grapevine, which runs the station at St John's Hospital, won three awards at the recent Hospital Broadcasting Association's national awards.

Art graduates have designs on residency role

Edinburgh's Telford College art and design team is offering graduates the opportunity to further their creative skills and develop their knowledge of art and design education, with a unique Artist in Residency post.

Under the programme, the college is giving two of its art and design graduates the chance to take up a four-month residency - an opportunity to further their creative education skills.

The application deadline is August 22.
