Local Round-up: Eye surgery's 20/20 vision

A PIONEERING laser eye surgery firm in Edinburgh is to celebrate its 20th birthday.

Ultralase's clinic has been based on London Road since 1991 and the firm is keen to mark its anniversary.

Chief executive Tony Veverka said: "Celebrating 20 years of changing people's lives is a significant milestone."

Baby death charity makes funds appeal

A CHARITY supporting parents who have lost babies has urged members to raise funds to coincide with an upcoming awareness week.

Sands Lothian said if every member raised 50 during Forget Me Not Week in early April, the charity would be "in a very healthy financial position".

Members can do anything from sponsored walks to coffee mornings to raise money, with the hope of keeping Sands' office open five days a week.

Garden project branches out with orchard plan

Drylaw and Telford Community Gardens Project is working with local residents and schools to plant two fruit orchards for the community.

The council land, which is currently unused, will grow a mixture of apples, pears, cherries and plums.

The trees are set to be planted on March 15 with the help of local residents and pupils from Ferryhill and Rowanfield schools.

The project has already set up nine community gardens and food growing areas across the neighbourhood.

Open week at road bridge

The operators of the Forth Road Bridge have revealed plans to hold an open week in June.

The event is expected to feature a special exhibition on the history of the bridge and its maintenance challenges, as well as tours of the structure. A similar event in October 2009 attracted more than 1000 visitors.

Directory growth is child's play

AN Edinburgh children's directory is set to expand into Glasgow and Fife after proving to be a hit with youngsters.

Kidding Around Edinburgh, a website listing things to do with children under the age of 12 in Edinburgh and the Lothians, has been running for more than a year.

Mum and dad are the words for new prize

YOUNGSTERS across the Capital are being invited to nominate their parents for the inaugural Mother/Father of the Year Award.

Hotel group The Town House Collection, which owns The Bonham in Edinburgh, has organised the competition.

Nominations are to be no longer than 200 words in length and should be accompanied by a family photograph or 60-second video clip.

The closing date for nominations, which can be e-mailed to [email protected], is March 18.
