Local Round-Up: Crews use sea water to fight island blaze

FIREFIGHTERS had to use buckets of sea water to tackle a blaze on Cramond Island last night after a lit bush left 100 square metres of gorse alight.

The four crew members were unable to use their appliance to reach the fire so ventured across the pathway and used buckets to slowly dampen the blaze.

It is not yet known if the fire was started deliberately.

The fire took hold at 6pm and a spokeswoman for the fire service said the crew had just two hours before the tide came in.

A CARE Home in Sighthill is hosting a royal wedding party to celebrate the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Blenham House will be decorated with bunting and photographs of the royal couple tomorrow.

A singer will entertain residents, who will also be treated to a buffet.

Speed traps out in force

DRIVERS are being warned mobile speed cameras will be in operation across the Lothians from Monday.

The camera sites include the A90 Cramond, A70 Balerno, West Granton Road, A89 Armadale, A706 Longridge, A706 Carnie Place, A71 Breich, A71 Polbeth and the A89 Lizzie Bryce.

Classroom goes up in flames

FIREFIGHTERS had to tackle a blaze in a classroom at the abandoned Oaklands Primary School yesterday evening.

The fire service said the blaze began around 6pm but did not spread to other parts of the building. It is not known if the fire was started deliberately.

Testing times as pupils prepare for exams

PUPILS across Edinburgh and the Lothians are gearing up for their Standard Grade and Higher exams, which kick off next Tuesday.

A total of 159,536 candidates in 549 schools and colleges throughout the country will be sitting exams this summer.

Those sitting their exams can ask to receive their results either by text message or e-mail, while all students will get their results delivered by post on August 4.

Students must register for this service via www.mysqa.info.

Free marina events float your boat

A MARINA in the Capital is to hold a day of free watersports on Saturday.

The Port Edgar Marina and Sailing School will include free dingy sailing, power boating and kayaking, as well as land-based activities like mountain biking, football and speedshot practice.

Adam Cruttenden, leisure manager at the venue, said: "The event has grown yearly with more activities enticing people to join in and try new sports."
