Local Round-up: Charity steps up fundraising with 5k walk

Children's charity Children 1ST, is calling on everyone in Edinburgh to take part in fundraising event The 1 Walk.

It takes place at Holyrood Park on Sunday, May 29 at 11am and is open to all the family. Participants will walk 5K and the route will take around an hour to complete.

Senior events fundraiser Lorna Millar said: "We chose the route around Holyrood Park because it's buggy-friendly so people can bring along children of all ages.

"Join us at The 1 Walk."

Wine night to help children

THE organisers of a wine event pledged more than a third of proceeds to help vulnerable children.

The Great Grog New World wine fair will take place on Friday at 6pm at Merchant's Hall on Hanover Steet.

The charity to benefit is Radio Forth's Cash for Kids appeal.

Primaries on green shortlist

TWO primary schools have been shortlisted in a national competition to design an environmentally-friendly vehicle.

Pupils from East Craigs and Juniper Green primaries are in the running for the Green Machine contest, announced tyre firm Bridgestone, which is backing the competition.

Bands on song for fun day

There will be a community fun day at the Water Board field in Buckstone on Saturday. It will feature a bouncy castle, stalls, refreshments, an inflatable "megaslide" and live music from Latitude 56 and Blackmail Lettering. It runs from noon until 4pm.

City woman saddles up for Sir Chris Hoy lunch

Heather Vipond from Oxgangs became the envy of sports fans across the UK yesterday as she attended an exclusive lunch with Olympic cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy.

Heather won the opportunity of the lunch for herself and husband Douglas through Trackside, a Bank of Scotland initiative which gives customers the chance to win tickets to London 2012 and enjoy experiences with British Olympians and Paralympians, including Sir Chris Hoy.

The lunch was held in Manchester near the velodrome.

Close in on historic side of Capital

A VISITOR attraction in the Capital has launched a new Golden Experience ticket - giving visitors to The Real Mary King's Close a double encounter with the historic side of the city.

The golden ticket includes a tour of the underground attraction, followed by a look around the closes above ground.

The Golden Experience ticket also includes a tour of the 'herring bone' alleyways running off the Royal Mile.
