Local Round-up: Charity offers runners spot in marathon

Meningitis UK is offering local residents places in the Edinburgh Marathon on May 22, when runners will take part in the second largest marathon in the UK.

The charity has offered to support and equip any hopefuls for the run, and for those less keen to run the full 26 miles, there's also the Edinburgh 10k on October 2.

Meningitis UK is highlighting and raising cash for the Search 4 a Vaccine Campaign and is urging any runners hoping to take part to visit its website.

Art display is city's latest happening

An exhibition of the work of eight contemporary artists will open at Art's Complex on London Road on Saturday. Happenings features the work of Gwen Black, Elise Chisholm, Thomas Chisholm, Jemma Derbyshire, Antonia Gallacher, Mark Lomax, Elaine Russell and Janet Soutar.

Each work has been created in response to a carefully selected text. The exhibition is open every day from 11am to 7pm until April 10.

Trust meeting to discuss future of Old Town

The Edinburgh Old Town Development Trust is opening its doors to the residents of the Old Town and Dumbiedykes tomorrow evening for the annual general meeting of the trust.

The event, to be held at Riddles Court, 322 Lawnmarket, will discuss setting up a food co-op to provide affordable fresh food in the Old Town and the failed Caltongate project, among other issues.

The meeting starts at 7pm and members of the public are welcome to attend.

Pupils give justice class a trial

Pupils at Victoria Primary School in Newhaven are due to hold a mock trial as part of their lessons today.

The primary six youngsters will play most of the parts. A lawyer will visit the school to play the part of the sheriff during the event this afternoon.

Louise likes Red Nose Day

A MUM-turned-inventor raised 560 for Comic Relief after deciding to make a donation every time someone "liked" her Facebook page. Louise Guinda, who started her Safe Dreams company after inventing a breathable cot bumper, got a 50p donation for each "like" on the night.

Hearing into polo field plan

A HEARING will take place today to discuss proposals to build housing on former army polo fields.

Planners rejected plans from Taylor Wimpey and Miller Homes to build 75 homes on the land at Dreghorn last June. But the developers appealed and the hearing will be heard at Fairmilehead Parish Church at 10am.
