Local News: Orienteering challenges in Holyrood Park

The Big Weekend orienteering events will take place in Edinburgh this weekend.

Saturday will feature an urban orienteering challenge, with a contest in Holyrood Park on Sunday.

The event is organised by Edinburgh University Orienteering Club.

Both events begin in Holyrood Park, to the rear of Holyrood Palace. Saturday's event begins at 12.30pm, with Sunday starting at 11am. Saturday's event also features a children's course.

Leith to host Burns Supper

THE Leith Festival will hold a fundraising Burns Supper at Leith Dockers Club on January 27.

The address to the haggis will be from master butcher Sandy Crombie, musician Andy Chung will toast the lassies, with comedian Susan Morrison giving the reply. See www.leithfestival.com

Pupils raise 2k for charity

PUPILS at George Heriot's have raised more than 2,200 in aid of the Gary O'Donnell memorial fund.

Edinburgh-born Gary O'Donnell served in the Army bomb disposal unit and was killed in 2008 in Afghanistan.

The money will go to the rehabilitation of service people who have lost limbs.

Health chiefs' public meeting at a new venue

THE next public meeting of the area's health bosses is to take place at a new venue in the city.

The NHS Lothian board meeting - which usually takes place at the organisation's headquarters at Waverley Gate - is to go ahead at the Gillis Centre on Strathearn Road, near Marchmont, on Wednesday.

Chairman Charles Winstanley said: "We made a commitment to hold our board meetings, which are open to the public, in different parts of the Lothians."

Farmer's market sets out stall

THE Juniper Green Farmers' Market will be on Saturday from 9am to 1pm.

It will be held next to the Kinleith Arms on Lanark Road.

Stallholders will be selling meat, vegetables, chocolate, game, fish and bread, among other produce.

THE AUTHOR of Ctesias' History of Persia: Tales of the Orient will be discussing his book at an event in the city next month.

Dr Lloyd Llewellyn-Jones will be chatting about his book at Blackwell's Bookshop on February 3 at 6pm.

People who come along to the event will also have the chance to purchase a signed copy of the book.

Writer booked up for city's Iran Festival

The free event is being held as part of this year's Edinburgh Iranian Festival.
