Local News: New spin on old car tyre problem

Pupils at Broomhouse Primary School have taken part in a competition to envisage how car tyres could be used once they are no longer roadworthy.

Pupils impressed judges with their ideas, which included re-use as soles for training shoes.

The contest was run by Bridgestone and McConechy's tyre dealerships.

Donald Carmichael, managing director of McConechy's, said: "This competition is a great way to get the children to think about greener and safer motoring."

Watt's lot dining out

A DINNER celebrating the birthday of steam pioneer James Watt has been organised by Heriot-Watt University.

The Watt Club dinner on January 19, will include a speech, "An Original Genius - James Watt and his Connections to Heriot-Watt", delivered by university archivist Ann Jones.

Blue Drill Hall goes to market

The Out of the Blue Drill Hall will host a flea market on January 22 from 10am to 2pm.

Art's Complex hosts display of vinyl finalists

Shortlisted entries in a competition to find the most exciting record sleeve of 2010 are to go on display at the Art's Complex gallery in London Road.

The Best Art Vinyl award was won in a public vote by the Klaxons album Surfing the Void, with its image of a cat in a spacesuit. The exhibition opens tomorrow and runs until February 4.

Art Vinyl founder Andrew Heeps said: "The Art Vinyl award is about honouring some of those unsung heroes of art and design."

RESIDENTS in the Capital are being invited to a monthly storytelling session at The Waverley Bar.

Guid Crack, with guest storyteller Russell McLarty, will take place at the St Mary's Street pub on 28 January at 7.30pm. No tickets are required but a donation of 3 is suggested.

Ladies only to celebrate the bard

A CHARITY event for women only will be held in the Capital to celebrate Scotland's bard.

Rabbie's Girls will take place in aid of Royal Blind on January 28 at the George Hotel.
