John Wu, a sixth-form pupil at Merchiston Castle School, will compete in the 42nd International Physics Olympiad in Bangkok in July.
The British Physics Olympiad Committee produces a series of competition papers.

Garden centre and boat trip for ME charity
A SERIES of events have been arranged for people living with ME in the Capital.
The charity Edinburgh ME Self-Help has organised a visit to Butterfly and Insect World, next to Dobbie's Garden Centre and a boat trip down the Union Canal.
The events are key to bringing people with the condition together, and giving patients motivation to take part in activities.
They will take place on May 6 and June 3 respectively.

Art students put Capital in the picture

Hide AdStudents from Edinburgh College of Art are holding an exhibition on the top floor of the unoccupied 102 Westport office building.
The ten-strong student design collective Heard About have produced a series of designs inspired by Edinburgh, which is exhibited alongside work of past students and designers.
There will also be talks by local designers. The display is on until Monday.
Author books launch event
AUTHOR Mark Douglas-Home will celebrate the launch of his first novel in Edinburgh next month.
He will be at Waterstone's West End to mark the launch of The Sea Detective on May 18, from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.
