Local News: Green flags flying high at two nurseries

Two city nurseries have been awarded a prestigious Green Flag award by Eco-Schools Scotland.

Part of Keep Scotland Beautiful, Green Flag status is awarded to nurseries and schools which set up environmental projects.

St Mary's Primary School nursery class in Leith impressed judges with a tree-planting event, "branching out".

Broomhouse Primary School nursery class were given the award after forming the "eco police" to check classes' eco behaviour.

Book launch on disability

Holyrood Abbey Parish Church in London Road will host a book launch on Thursday at 7pm.

Rev Graham Monteith will discuss his three latest books on disability issues and the church, including Visibly Invisible: a Pilgrimage as a Disabled Minister.

There will be refreshments.

Waste-free 'heroes' set to pedal prizes

THREE lucky school pupils will be collecting new bikes on Thursday after winning a competition.

John MacIntosh, 10, Robert Moir, 6, and Libby Watson, 9, are the winners of the Changeworks' Heroes at Home competition, which ran last year as part of the Waste Free Edinburgh project.

The pupils were selected for their commitment to getting their family involved in reducing household waste.

Scales tipped in favour of fish bar's late nights

A TAKEAWAY restaurant in Newington is set to get later opening hours.

When the Newington Traditional Fish Bar won planning consent in 2003, its opening hours were restricted to 8am-8pm. It now wants to extend them to 1am on Sunday-Thursday, and 2am at weekends. Planning officials have judged that the area around it is "characterised by late night-time activity" and later hours will not have an adverse impact on residents.

Councillors will make a final decision on Wednesday.

Six slim down to gain pounds

SIX Midlothian residents are celebrating their losses after winning a total of 570 for losing 93lbs between them.

A total of 26 people took part in the Arriba Community Weight Loss Challenges - a 12-week bid to lose weight and get healthy - in Dalkeith and Penicuik.
