Local News: Black is back for launch of new thriller

A CRIME writer from Edinburgh is to return to the Capital to launch his latest novel.

Tony Black moved to Australia last year, but has continued his writing and will unveil his latest work at Blackwell's Books on South Bridge on February 9.

The book, Truth Lies Bleeding, has been much anticipated as the writer enjoys a growing following. Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh described him as "my favourite British crime writer".

The event begins at 6.30pm.

Pub raffle to help Oz flood

A fundraising raffle is to be held as part of celebrations for Australia Day.

The Walkabout pub in the Omni Centre will hold a raffle on January 26 and take donations, with all proceeds going to the Premiers Flood Relief Appeal, to help those affected by the flooding in Australia.

BARBERSHOP choir, The Rolling Hills Chorus, will have an open night for prospective members on February 1.

Fringe spot contest is no joke

Highlight Comedy Club is running an open mic competition to win a free slot during this year's Fringe.

Heats will be held at the club in the Omni Centre between February and May, with finals in June. To enter, e-mail [email protected].

School creates bad weather action plan

A PRIMARY school in the Capital is to draw up an action plan for future bad winter weather.

Currie Primary's parent council held a meeting to discuss the school's closure during the cold snap last month.

It found there was confusion over who takes the decision to close the school and what criteria is used.

The action plan will look at what will happen the next time there is bad weather.

Join in the swing of things with lyrical event

THE Rat Pack's classic lyrics will be discussed at an event in Ratho Library next month.

Viva Las Vegas will take place on February 4, from 10.30am to 11.30am.

The event is part of the Edinburgh Unesco City of Literature campaign "Let's Get Lyrical", the fifth annual reading campaign, which follows the success of last year's "Carry a Poem" campaign.

This year's event is all about song lyrics. Tickets for Viva Las Vegas are not required.
