A PROJECT to tackle a cause of breast cancer in its early stages has been handed a £22,500 boost.

Edinburgh University's research project could help thousands of women.

Hallmark Cards gave the cash as part of its Cards for a Cure scheme.

Project leader Professor Ian Kunkler said: "This is a very significant sum of money and we are extremely grateful.

"The findings will ultimately allow clinicians to provide patents with detailed information."

Family arts centre lands investment

AN arts centre in the city is set to benefit from a multi-million-pound investment aimed at improving children's lives.

The Scottish Government will invest 7 million in voluntary projects, including the North Edinburgh Arts Centre.

The scheme was launched at the Pilton facility.

Children's minister Adam Ingram said: "Research shows that effective, early support for vulnerable children is beneficial."

Speed camera sites revealed

DRIVERS are being warned that mobile speed cameras will be in operation from Monday on the A90 Cramond, West Granton Road, Muirhouse Parkway and A706 Longridge.

They will also be on the A71 Briech, A89 Armadale, A71 Polbeth, A705 East Whitburn and the A899 Lizzie Bryce.

Bingo members have a ball in aid of charity

Members of the Leith Capitol Mecca Bingo club are supporting the Great Daffodil Appeal this year through a range of events, including yellow-themed days, charity auctions and street collections.

The appeal, which is Marie Curie's flagship fundraiser, takes place this month and aims to raise more than 5.5 million.

Gerry Chishom, manager at Mecca Bingo in Leith Capitol, "Our fundraisers are geared up and ready to help raise as much money as they can for such a worthy organisation."

Raise a glass at pub party

A CITY bar will celebrate its first birthday over the weekend.

The Ghillie Dhu will mark the anniversary with a host of live gigs, starting tonight.

Guests will be able to order a special celebratory three-course meal and attend a variety of entertainment events across the weekend.
