Liz McColgan appears in court over husband assault

FORMER Olympic silver medallist Liz McColgan has appeared in court today charged with the assault of her estranged husband.

The 47-year-old is alleged to have punched her husband - fellow athlete Peter - repeatedly on the head and body before throwing his clothes out of a window.

The former track star shot to fame in the late 1980s for her performances in the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh were she took gold in the 10,000 meters before following it up two years later with Olympic silver in the same event in Seoul.

Appearing at Arbroath Sheriff Court today Ms McColgan spoke only to confirm her name. She is also accused of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner by shouting repeatedly.

The athlete, who denies all charges, has been ordered to stand trial on 21 November and to a attend a pre-trial hearing on the 1st of that month.
