Lights break budget

MORE than £3 million was spent on electricity for the city's 63,000 street lights last year, new figures show.

The details, which were released under Freedom of Information laws, showed the council spent 3.2m on electricity in 2009/10 and expects to spend 2.65m for 2010/11.

The council said the annual budget for street lamps was 1.4m.
