Light fitting fall forces pool to close

A SWIMMING pool in the Lothians is to be closed for a month after a light fitting fell from the ceiling.

Six swimmers were in the pool at Newbattle Swimming Pool, with another two people at the side, when the light fitting fell eight metres from the ceiling into the water last Monday.

No-one was injured, but a review is now being carried out of all the other light fitting surrounds at the pool to ensure the problem does not occur again.

Midlothian Council's cabinet member for education and communities, Councillor Peter Boyes, said: "The pool was closed immediately and an investigation is under way.

"The council is working to ensure this does not occur again. Due to the timescales involved it is estimated that the pool will remain closed until the end of May."

It is hoped the pool will open again on 25 May, although this date has yet to be confirmed.
