Several friends and colleagues have posted tributes on blogs and social networking sites.

Mark Pack, co-editor of the Liberal Democrat Voice blog, said: "Andrew had a long career in the party, including working for Vince Cable in Twickenham and Lynne Featherstone in Hornsey & Wood Green and stewarding at party conferences.

"Andrew was always one of the happiest and kindest people I worked with."

Mr Reeves was an avid blogger and online communicator, writing the Andrew Reeves Running Blog.

In January he told readers he and partner Roger had joined in a civil partnership.

A party spokeswoman said Mr Reeves' family had requested privacy and said the Lib Dems would not be making any official announcements. The cause of death is unconfirmed.
