Leith's colours shine through as gala marches on despite the rain

RELENTLESS rain put a dampener on what was supposed to be the biggest Leith Gala Day ever.

But despite the terrible conditions, thousands turned out to enjoy the spectacle.

Local bands played and numerous stalls were set up on Saturday as part of the traditional event at Leith Links.

The gala marks the beginning of the Leith Festival, which will run until June 19, and organisers and residents attending said the rain did not spoil people's enjoyment of the event.

Michael Scott, 24, a plumber from Leith, took his visiting nephews to the gala.

He said: "When we woke up and saw the rain we did consider doing something else.

"But I'm glad we stuck with it. It's a great community occasion and a lot of work goes into the organising of it."

Among the organisations at the gala day were the Scottish Lime Centre, local churches and the Leith Historical Society.
