Leith Festival concert to raise funds for school project in African village

DRAGON boats and a rural community in South Africa may not appear to have much in common.

But there is a link - the Rotary Club of Leith. For the club, which is busy organising a major Chinese dragon boat festival at the Western Harbour in Leith on September 3, is also organising a concert to raise funds for the village area of Goboti in Eastern Cape.

The Edinburgh-based Sing in the City Choir will present Leith Festival's charity concert in South Leith Parish Church on Saturday, from 7.30pm.

The concert is part of the festival and tickets cost 8 (6 concessions).

Money raised will go to the Friends of Goboti, a Scottish charity which is helping to fund the construction of a new school in the village district of Upper Enduku, to replace an overcrowded and run-down mud building.

Cron Mackay, president of the Rotary Club of Leith, said: "The concert will be our first effort in what will be a long-term support project for Goboti."
