Leigh Griffiths to stand trial over offensive song

CELTIC striker Leigh Griffiths is to stand trial at Edinburgh Sheriff Court in October on a charge under the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Act.

It is alleged that the former Hibs player and supporter of the club, sang a song with offensive lyrics, which was likely to incite public disorder, in Roseburn Terrace in Edinburgh, on March 30 last year before the derby match between Hearts and Hibs at Tynecastle.

Griffiths, 24, of Wallyford, was not present in court today when the case was called.

Defence solicitor, Mark Hutchison told Sheriff Pamela Bowman that a Glasgow firm of solicitors had sent in a letter pleading Not Guilty to the charge, but it had not been included in the Fiscal’s papers.

He then lodged the Not Guilty plea and the case was continued to trial, with an Intermediate Diet in September.
