Legendary Stone Roses Spike Island gig is centre stage in new film

The celebrated Spike Island concert by the Stone Roses is to be immortalised in a new film.

The 1990 show was a highpoint in the band's career with nearly 30,000 people flocking to the outdoor gig near Widnes in Cheshire.

It will be the backdrop for a new film being made by the director of Channel 4 hit Misfits, Tom Green.

The concert - affectionately known as the "baggy Woodstock" - came as the Madchester scene was at its height.

The Mancunian band, which was flying high on the back of top ten hit Fools Gold and a highly regarded debut album, had played a major show at Blackpool Tower's Empress Ballroom a few months earlier, then went one better with their own mini-festival at Spike Island.

The new film follows a group of young council estate hopefuls in unsigned band Shadowcaster who head to the show to see their idols. Filming will begin later this year.
