Lecturer nets £70k award

A LECTURER at Edinburgh University has been honoured with an award reserved for internationally-recognised scholars.

Dr Alain George, lecturer in Islamic art, has been presented with a Philip Leverhulme Prize.

These awards are given to outstanding scholars who have made an internationally- recognised contribution to their field of study, yet have the potential to achieve more.

Dr George's research interests are in the art and architecture of the early Islamic period and Islamic literature.

His 70,000 award was one of 13 granted to the College of Humanities and Social Sciences in a month.

During the month, the college saw the total value of its research awards increase by 57 per cent compared with the same period in 2009.
