Learner driver ruptures pipe

A STREET had to be evacuated after a learner driver drove into a house in Newcraighall and ruptured a gas pipe.

Twenty to 30 residents of Park Terrace were evacuated to Newcraighall Primary School while fire crews and gas engineers worked to stem the flow of gas.

The Fiat car hit the terraced house at around 8pm last night. No one was injured.

Fire crews used a system called DAMIT which stems the flow of gas, and handed the operation over to Scottish Gas at around 9.30pm.

A temporary cap was fitted and the residents were led back to their homes at around 9.15pm.
