Leaders pay tribute to former MSP Phil Gallie

Political leaders across the party divide yesterday paid tribute to the former Conservative MSP Phil Gallie, who has died at the age of 71.

Mr Gallie served as MP for Ayr between 1992 and 1997, before going on to represent the South of Scotland region in the first two sessions of the Scottish Parliament. He died suddenly in the early hours yesterday.

Scottish Conservative leader Annabel Goldie said: "Phil was that rare breed of politician: admired by friend and foe alike and a tireless advocate for the people of his beloved Ayr, his party and Scotland."

First Minister Alex Salmond said: "Phil was always a lively, energetic and high-profile parliamentarian, both at Westminster and Holyrood, and was well-liked by colleagues across the political spectrum."

Labour leader Iain Gray said Mr Gallie had a "common touch", while Liberal Democrat leader Tavish Scott said he was "doughty fighter" for the political values he believed in.

Mr Gallie is survived by his children, Kirsteen and Craig, and his grandchildren.

He was married to Marion, whom he cared for until her death in 2006.
