Leader's cycle safety challenge

EAST Lothian council leader David Berry has agreed to take an early-morning cycle ride to reassure parents a road is safe for children.

He took up the challenge after parents in Ormiston protested against the council's decision to cut free transport for children living within three miles of their secondary school.

He suggested that pupils affected by the cuts should cycle to school. But many parents were concerned about their children using the main road, especially on dark winter mornings and evenings.

The decision was taken at a budget meeting earlier this month, and will save an estimated 80,000.

The changes will come into effect from August.
