Land's highest honour goes to big-hearted oil tycoon Sir Ian Wood

Sir Ian, 73, who received a knighthood more than 20 years ago, said: “This was really a big surprise – I was very happy with my knighthood.

“It’s obviously a huge honour for myself and my family, but I truly believe it’s recognition for the oil and gas industry, for Aberdeen and its contribution to that industry and for the people with whom I have worked over the years. Frankly, this honour says a lot about them.”

Sir Ian, ex-chairman of the Wood Group, has been made a GBE for his work in both Scotland and Africa. The honour was made in light of his exceptional service to the oil and gas industry, employment of young people in Scotland and achievements of the Wood Foundation, which works with 50,000 tea farmers in Tanzania and Rawanda and promotes philanthropy and citizenship in Scots schools.

Earlier this year, Sir Ian pledged £25 million to support new business in the north east and help secure the local economy beyond the oil and gas years.

He said: “This honour is going to give me an even greater sense of responsibility to ensure I put as much back into the economic community of Aberdeen.”

He said he hoped to collect his award at the Palace of Holyroodhouse with his grandchildren.
