Lanarkshire police officer dies after collapsing on duty

A POLICE officer has collapsed and died on duty after taking unwell while attending an emergency call at a hotel.

The officer has been asked to respond to a 999 call with a colleague on Monday night when he became ill.

They had driven to the Newhouse Premier Travel Inn in Lanarkshire to deal with the incident before an ambulance had to be called for the 55-year-old constable.

He was rushed to nearby Wishaw General Hospital but died a short time later.

His death is not being treated as suspicious and is not related to the incident he was attending. It is thought to have been caused by a medical condition.

The constable worked for Police Scotland’s Q Division which covers the Lanarkshire area.

A source said: “The officers had been on patrol in the area and got a call to attend at the hotel.

“They went in and started speaking to the people involved but the officer then complained to his partner that he felt unwell and went outside.

“A few minutes later he was found collapsed outside the hotel and the emergency services were called.”

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: “Around 11.40pm on Monday, May 3, whilst attending an emergency call at the Newhouse Travel Inn, Edinburgh Road, Motherwell, a 55-year-old serving police officer took unwell and collapsed.

“He was taken by ambulance to Wishaw General Hospital where he sadly died a short time later.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious.”
