Knight digs deep into castle history in archaeology celebration

A KNIGHT dressed in chain mail is set to lead a tour of a historic 14th-ventury castle as part of East Lothian Archaeology Week.

The unusual guided tour will take place at Hailes Castle, near East Linton on 11 September. The tour of the castle, which has counted Mary Queen of Scots amongst its guests, is part of the newly-unveiled programme for this year's archaeological celebration. Guided walking tours include the 'Burgh Boundary of Old North Berwick', 'The changing landscape of East Lothian's past from the top of Traprain Law', 'Archaeology of the Garletons from Athelstaneford to the Garleton ridge exploring the Iron Age hill forts', and 'The historic village of Stenton'.

East Lothian Council's heritage officer, Biddy Simpson, said:

"This year's events touch on our prehistoric ancestors and how communities then lived and survived."

The events run between 5 and 12 September.
