Killie’s cup joy cut short by tragedy

Kilmarnock’s joy at their League Cup final win over Celtic was cut short last night as midfielder Liam Kelly’s father suffered a fatal heart attack.

Last night, club chairman Michael Johnston said: “Liam went to his family at the final whistle and his father collapsed and has since died.

“Liam left the field in a very distressed condition, and our thoughts are with him and the rest of his family at this terrible time.”

The 22-year-old was seen running up the tunnel at the final whistle in tears, after his father, Jack, collapsed towards the end of the match at Hampden..

His father was taken to Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow after being treated by paramedics at the scene, but he later died.

The news of the collapse reached the rest of the team just as they were lifting the Scottish Communities League Cup for the first time in the club’s history.

The players halted their celebrations and immediately left the pitch.

Kilmarnock manager Kenny Shiels said: “The dressing room is very despondent, and I don’t know why the man above sends down these messages to us.”
