Killer mother wants verdict overturned

A MUM jailed for smothering her infant daughter almost 30 years ago returned to court yesterday to try to overturn her conviction.

Jennifer Liehne, 47, claims she suffered a miscarriage of justice because of the way the judge at her trial failed to explain to the jury some of the complex medical and legal issues involved in the case.

Liehne of Edinburgh stood trial for murder but was convicted of a reduced charge of culpable homicide. A ten-year jail sentence was later reduced to seven years on appeal. Now the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission has asked the Court of Criminal Appeal in Edinburgh to look again at whether the conviction should stand.

The hearing is expected to last all week, with a decision in writing later.
