Kevin Carroll murder: ‘Gerbil’ had bullet-hole in forehead, court hears

A GANGLAND figure shot dead in a supermarket car park was found with a hole in his forehead, a court was told.

Kevin “Gerbil” Carroll was gunned down in the back seat of a black Audi A3 parked outside Asda in Robroyston, Glasgow by masked men in January 2010, a trial at the High Court in Glasgow has heard.

On Wednesday, ambulance worker Thomas McNulty, who arrived at the scene shortly after the shooting, described seeing Mr Carroll dead in the back of the vehicle.

He said: “He had a wound in his forehead. It looked like a hole in his forehead. I also seen another injury on his hand. He showed no signs of life.”

He agreed that it was “obvious he was dead”.

Mr McNulty was giving evidence at the trial of Ross Monaghan, 30, who denies repeatedly shooting and murdering Mr Carroll, while acting with others, on 13 January 2010. He has lodged a special defence of incrimination, blaming a man who cannot be named for legal reasons and seven others.

Witnesses have described seeing masked gunmen come out of a car and repeatedly fire at the back of the black Audi then drive away at speed.

The attack seemed “totally planned” and the gunmen had “no interest in harming anyone else”, a supermarket worker said.

Alexander McBride said he saw the attack from a short distance away. He said the shooting was over in “15 seconds”.

He said: “To me it looked as if it was totally planned. They had no interest in harming anyone else, in my opinion. I wasn’t afraid.

“I was just dumbfounded. I was just standing there looking as if it wasn’t happening. It was surreal.”

One shopper, John Aitchison, said he thought he was watching a TV programme being made as he heard “popping” noises and people started screaming.

The 39-year-old told the trial: “At first I thought a film crew or something, that they were filming something for TV. But afterwards I realised something serious was going on.”

Schoolteacher Anne MacIntosh became upset as she described crouching on the ground and listening to the gunshots.

She said: “I was scared. I tried to make myself as small as possible. I didn’t understand what was happening. The gunfire seemed to go on for such a long time.”

She said she did not see the shots being fired because the gunman had disappeared from her line of vision.

Monaghan is also alleged to have attempted to defeat the ends of justice by concealing a revolver, a pistol and ammunition under bricks and undergrowth, and setting fire to a car.

He is further charged with possessing guns and ammunition without a proper certificate.

Monaghan denies all the charges against him.
