The Bayoh family condemned Mr MacAskill for pre-judging the investigation after he wrote an article for a police journal in which he said it was likely to reveal Mr Bayoh’s death had been a “tragic accident”.

After Mr Anwar criticised the MSP’s intervention, Mr MacAskill accused the lawyer of using the Bayoh case to keep his “profile high”, adding that the ongoing controversy was “good for business”.

In an exchange between the two men on Twitter, Mr Anwar replied by saying he would continue to carry on with the campaign to get justice for Mr Bayoh.

Yesterday, the lawyer representing the police officers involved in the case called for questions to be answered about what Mr Bayoh had been doing in the hours before his death.

It has been reported that Mr Bayoh had been taking ecstasy and fought with Zahid Saeed, the father of Mikaeel Kular, who was killed by his mother in 2014.
