Junkie knocked OAP to ground and stole cash

A DRUG addict knocked a pensioner to the ground and robbed him of £50 to feed his habit.

Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard Stewart Jones, 31, attacked victim James Clapperton, 66, at the Spar in Lindsay Road, Newhaven, leaving him with a fracture to his humerus and cuts to his hands.

Fiscal depute Gillian More said Mr Clapperton had just withdrawn 50 from the cash machine when Jones approached him from behind, tapped him on the shoulder, and said "I'll take that".

Jones then seized the money and Mr Clapperton fell to the ground.

Jones, of Lindsay Road, admitted the assault and robbery on March 18 this year.

Sheriff James Scott deferred sentence on Jones until next month for background reports.
