John Muir's Birthplace given top marks

A MUSEUM dedicated to the life and work of conservation pioneer John Muir has been awarded a maximum five stars by tourism body VisitScotland.

John Muir's Birthplace, in Dunbar's High Street, is now one of only four five-star attractions in East Lothian.

The centre was tested on a range of criteria from the welcome, knowledge and efficiency of staff, to the information available and cleanliness of facilities.

VisitScotland also noted positive improvements since the last grading in 2008, including new signage, a new plaque, freshly-painted exterior and the museum's plans to introduce interactive displays.

John Muir was born in 1838 and spent his formative years in Dunbar before moving to America in 1849.

He became one of the founding fathers of the US conservation and national parks movement.

His former home was been turned into a museum promoting his work and celebrating his East Lothian connections to audiences both locally and internationally.

Councillor Ruth Currie said: "This is a fantastic achievement for the team. John Muir's influence spreads far and wide and the Birthplace has gained international recognition."
