Jail for man who raped girl in his care

A MAN who raped a young girl he was supposed to be looking after has been jailed for 12 years.

After attacking the 12-year-old in a bedroom of a house in Edinburgh, Barrie Lewis, 39, gave the youngster 10 and told her: "Don't tell your mum or dad."

The High Court in Edinburgh heard that the rape came to light because Lewis had also been sexually molesting another girl.

She told a school pal that Lewis, who is autistic and has a low IQ, had been "touching her" but asked the friend to keep her secret.

Some two years later the friend told her mum and the mum contacted the family of the victims.

In court, Lewis, of Greendykes Road, Edinburgh, pleaded guilty to raping the 12-year-old.

He also admitted other sexual offences against her, starting when she was younger.

He pleaded guilty to using indecent behaviour with the second girl and admitted having a stash of child porn on his computer.

Sentencing him yesterday, judge Lord Kinclaven said there was no alternative to prison.

Lewis' name has been added to the sex offenders' register.
