It's horses for main courses at restaurant

A RESTAURANT in the Capital has put horse back on the menu in Scotland for the first time in more than 70 years.

Frenchman Fred Berkmiller, who owns L'Escargot Bleu in Broughton Street, has imported a rump of horse from Paris and diners at the restaurant got their first taste of it last week.

Mr Berkmiller said: "I'm not pushing people to eat horse, but I eat it regularly. It is tender, sweet and less fatty than beef, and contains higher levels of iron and Omega-3. "

The move has already come under fire from campaigners, with the Vegetarian Society branding equine eating "abhorrent".

The International League for the Protection of Horses said: "It is irresponsible to promote horse meat consumption while failing to inform about the appalling abuses of animals in the industry."
