'Invest tar sands cash elsewhere'

CAMPAIGNERS are calling today for billions of pounds of investment in oil from tar sands to be switched to more sustainable developments.

A report by the Co-operative and WWF UK claims some 250 billion will be invested by major companies in extracting the fossil fuel in Alberta, Canada, by 2025.

The organisations, who oppose the projects because of their environmental impact, said that investment could cover the cost of much greener projects.

They say it could pay for a shift to electric cars across the whole of Europe, or for a 10,000 eco-upgrade for every UK house.
