Internationl news in brief: Teenager survives Golden Gate fall

A TEENAGE girl has survived a fall from the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco Bay.

The city's fire department said the girl, 16, was in the water for 20 minutes on Sunday before being pulled to safety conscious and responsive.

She was taken to Marin General Hospital in nearby Greenbrae.

About 25 people each year die in jumps from the bridge, 200 feet above the water.

Russia has banned a neo-nationalist group linked to a 7,000-strong demonstration near Red Square in December that erupted in racial violence.

Six killed by truck on walk to school

Six children were killed after being hit by a truck while walking to school in Japan.

Police said yesterday's accident occurred in Tochigi, north of Tokyo. The children – five boys and a girl – were aged 9 to 11.

Police said the truck hit the children before crashing into a house. Police arrested the truck's 26-year-old driver.

Two car bombs go off in Baghdad

Two car bombs exploded near a security checkpoint at Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone yesterday, killing five people and wounding at least 15 more.

An Iraqi security spokesman said two suicide bombers struck during the morning rush hour in a line of vehicles queuing at the western entry to the zone.

Banks acquitted of dairy firm collapse

A MILAN court yesterday acquitted four banks on criminal charges related to the 2003 collapse of the Parmalat dairy empire. Prosecutors had petitioned the court to confiscate €120 million from Morgan Stanley, Deutsche Bank, Citigroup and Bank of America.
