International news in brief: ETA extortion pledge to business group

Business associations in Spain's northern Basque and Navarra regions said they have received letters from the armed independence group ETA saying their members will no longer be subjected to extortion demands.

Navarra Business Confederation president Jose Antonio Sarria yesterday said his association was taking the letter seriously.

Five die in Taleban attack on navy bus

Taleban militants detonated a roadside bomb in the Pakistani city of Karachi yesterday, killing four members of the navy, the third attack on the navy in less than a week.

A motorcyclist was also killed in the blast targeted at a navy bus, while at least five people were wounded, a navy spokesman said.

Security experts say the attacks on the navy, seen as a soft target with less effective protection, could be part of a new strategy.

Two guilty of killing rights campaigners

Two Russian nationalists were convicted yesterday of killing a prominent human rights lawyer and a reporter, who were gunned down in a daytime attack in central Moscow more than two years ago.

A jury at Moscow City Court convicted Nikita Tikhonov, 31, and his girlfriend Yevgenia Khasis, 26, in the January 2009 killing of Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova.

Woman beheaded in school horror

Indian police said a man beheaded an 18-year-old woman at her school in front of her classmates in the city of Ranchi.

The attacker later told police he was in love with the woman, but her parents would not allow them to marry.

A police spokesman yesterday said officers arrested Bijendra Kumar on suspicion of killing Khushbu, who used only one name.

Divorce for couple separated by a wall

A feuding New York City couple who built a wall through the house that neither one would give up have finally been granted a divorce.

Simon and Chana Taub had been living with the wall that a judge ordered built in 2007 since both refused to move.

At the time, the state did not allow the speedy dissolution of a marriage without proof one spouse was at fault.
