International briefs: Yemen

A WEEK of deadly clashes which threatened to tip Yemen into civil war has ended with an uneasy truce between the forces of president Ali Abdullah Saleh and a tribal group.

Thousands of people fled the capital, Sana'a, and around 115 were killed last week.

Residents said there had been no renewal of fighting in Sana'a's northern district of Hasaba, site of sustained fighting for government buildings.

It is feared the continuing chaos could benefit the Yemen-based branch of al-Qaeda and threaten neighbouring Saudi Arabia.
