Inspectors 'losing plot' over nursery

A COUNCILLOR has accused government inspectors of "losing the plot" in calling for young children to be given responsibility for planning their nursery routines.

Councillor Willie Innes, opposition leader on East Lothian Council, said Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Education is wrong to be "critical" of St Gabriel's RC Primary School nursery for "not giving nursery children more of a management role".

Although the nursery scored overall 'good' ratings, the report stated: "Children do not have enough opportunities to take on responsibilities such as planning their daily routines. Children need better opportunities to widen their achievement, such as being more involved in school committees."

Mr Innes said: "I sometimes think the HMIe are losing the plot. To expect three-year-olds to share in the management responsibilities of the nursery is a piece of nonsense."
